2001.10.16

① After one year of intensive preparation, the 1st Sport Fishing World Champion Cup has finally come to set out with its venue located in the Hirado of Nagasaki prefecture. The organizing headquarters was set up in “Petit Hotel Tabiland”, an inexpensive hotel managed by Tabira-cho town that faces Hirado island over the Hirado-seto Channel. The game site for the tournament was the Goto islands and its adjacent waters, the dreamy fishing spot for Japanese anglers.
In Hirado city, 2001 was the year to commemorate the 400-year history of amity between Japan and Netherlands. This gave a greater significance to the 1st SFWCC event to take place, where the anglers of good will around the world have come together.

② When we attempt to organize an international tournament such as this, the greatest challenge is the local specificity of fishing methods and the category of fishes that differ from place to place.
Within Japan or Korea, the Surf Casting is the kind of fishing that is the most popular and in which the highest masterly handling of fishing is challenged. But the Surf Casting is much unknown in other Asian countries or farther western region. For this reason, SFWCC has adopted an optional method for the participating players to select from one of the two categories of Surf Casting and Boat Fishing, in order to offer to all the equal opportunity of winning.
In this tournament, Japan, Korea, and Taiwan entered the Surf Casting, and the rest of the nations preferred the Boat Fishing.

③ The participants started to arrive from Fukuoka International Airport riding on the shuttle buses. Having registered at the Organizing headquarters tent set up at Noda harbor, each drew lots to determine the entry number, the group to fight the preliminary match, and the number of boat for boarding. Also, the players were handed over the necessary equipment for the tournament.

④ The lodging for the participants, the “Tabiland” was built on a low hill from which one could watch over the beautiful sea water right in front. The well- selected judges who came to support the game were stationed at “Grass House”.

2002.10.17

① The typhoon No.21 that grew at the eastern sea of Philippine islands was heading toward Taiwan. But on the 16th, it, all of a sudden, turned the direction to the north.

On the 17th, the day when the event officially was meant to start, the typhoon was moving straight toward the west coast of Kyushu where the Goto islands have located. If there was no drastic change to this climatic condition, the SFWCC was forced to be either postponed or, for the worst, to be aborted. The committee of judges had a serious meeting till midnight.

② The scheduled test fishing was done only with the Surf Casting category. The players sailed out at 6 a.m. for the shore of Goto islands. The sea was too rough for the Boat Fishing.

③ The orientation for the participants started at 2 p.m. as scheduled. The tournament rules were confirmed and the players in the same group greeted with each other.

④ At 5 p.m. Welcome Dinner was prepared by Tabira town, and the Opening Ceremony followed it. Although the unfavorable whether condition was the concern in the minds of all the participants, the room was filled with the expectation and enthusiasm of those who gathered from the 5 oceans and 6 continents. Starting with the President Dae Jung Kim of Korea, the congratulatory messages from Japanese members of Diet, the incumbent president, the prime ministers and VIPs from over 20 nations were read out.
It was regrettable that although over 40 nations have decided to send the representative players, many were not allowed into Japan in time, due to the tense international political situations since the Sep.11th incident in New York.

⑤ Watching over a changing whether report, the serious discussions among administrative staff and tournament judges continued. All of a sudden, there was the news that the typhoon made a drastic turn toward East. In Japan’s history, there was a time that Yuan dynasty of China sailed through Tsushima Strait with 20000 soldiers and attacked Japan. They landed on the shore of Hakata and blew out Japanese Samurai Army. But while they rested on the navy boats at night in Hakata Bay, the northward typhoon attacked the area and crushed the Yuan troops. It was the 20th of October 1274. Japan called it divine wind.
This time, however, the high atmospheric pressure that timely stretched over the Korean Peninsula southward and the strong circumpolar westerlies pushed this typhoon away toward east. A mysterious sense of excitement arose in the heart of every person.

2001.10.18

① The players for the Boat Fishing category went out for the trial fishing in the morning. The official tournament started in the afternoon. The original plan was to go through two stages before the final, the Preliminary match and the Semi-final, the players who became the first in the preliminary match went directly to the Final. They boarded 9 ships with 4 or 5 players on each. The playing time is three hours and the winner is determined be the total weight of fishes larger than 25cm.
The fishing method is the anchored rod fishing with three hooks. The bait is the live shrimp. The point was northern adjacent water of Hirado Island.

② The players for Surf Casting category headed for Goto Islands on the high-speed boats of Ajika Surf Fishing Center. The ships, famous of their black body and impressive speed among anglers, sailed through predawn rough waters about 1 hour.
In the end, Japan, Korea and Taiwan entered this category. Each of the 16 players who represented their countries formed a group of three to play in the preliminary match. Mejina porgy is the fish to catch. They shifted the fishing point every 40 minutes over 2 hours, and the winner was determined by the total weight of the fishes larger than 25cm. 18 winners from each group including 2 repechage players again formed 6 groups to fight in the second preliminary match.

③ At the headquarters tent, the fishing results coming in from the game site by the minute was recorded on the wall size tournament billboard.

2001.10.19

① The Boat Fishing team set out at 6 a.m. 9 players fought in the Final Match.

② The Surf Casting team left at 4:30 a.m. 6 players were divided into 3 pairs to compete in the Semi-final. And winning 3 players fought in the Final over the Champion Cup.

③ The entire game was over, and the players returned to the port by 2 p.m.
At 5 p.m. the Award Ceremony and the Closing Session began. While the participants praised each one’s achievement, and promised to meet again, the 1st Sport Fishing World Champion Cup has been completed in a marvelous success.
